Thanksgiving at Home: A Table Full of Blessings

Thanksgiving at Home: A Table Full of Blessings

Thanksgiving at home has a familiar rhythm: an extra leaf on the dining table, favourite serving dishes brought out of the cupboard, and the smell of apples and cinnamon drifting from the kitchen. Across Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga, the autumn colours offer their own beautiful backdrop to a weekend of gathering.

For many families, this is also a time to pause and give thanks for the blessings in their lives. Before the meal begins and conversation fills the room, a prayer of gratitude reminds us of the blessings we can sometimes overlook: the people beside us, the food before us and the comfort of a place to call home.

Gratitude in the everyday

Thanksgiving invites us to notice what a busy week can make easy to miss. A neighbour who checks in. A friend who always makes time. The sound of children coming through the front door. An ordinary evening spent with someone we love.

Faith gives those everyday moments a deeper meaning. They become opportunities to recognize the care that surrounds us and to respond with generosity, patience and kindness.

That gratitude can sit alongside difficult feelings, too. For anyone facing a loss, a change or an uncertain season, the holiday may feel different this year. There is room at the table for those feelings, and comfort in knowing we do not have to carry them alone.

A welcoming home

A meaningful Thanksgiving gathering can begin with a few thoughtful touches. Set out candles, bring in branches from the garden, or place handwritten notes at each setting. Ask everyone to share one thing they are thankful for before dinner. Children might enjoy writing their answers on paper leaves to collect in a bowl.

Consider inviting someone who would appreciate the company. A neighbour spending the weekend alone, a friend far from family, or someone new to the community may be grateful for a place at your table.

Donating to a local food bank or delivering a meal to someone going through a difficult time is another way to put gratitude into practice. The blessings we receive can become blessings we share.

Something sweet to share

A warm apple crisp is a lovely way to finish Thanksgiving dinner. Assemble it ahead of time and bake while everyone enjoys the meal, filling the house with the scent of cinnamon.

Maple Apple Crisp

Serves: 6–8
Prep time: 20 minutes
Bake time: 40–50 minutes

For the filling

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced into roughly ¼-inch pieces
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

For the topping

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter a 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. Toss the apples with the maple syrup, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Spread evenly in the dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Work in the butter with your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 40–50 minutes, until the topping is golden, the filling bubbles around the edges and the apples are tender. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
  5. Let stand for 10–15 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or lightly whipped cream.

Make-ahead tip: Prepare the filling and topping separately, cover and refrigerate for up to a day. Assemble just before baking; allow extra baking time if the filling is cold.
